Civic Engagement--Identity in a Jar

Making Art while engaging with the community:

The Agents of Change aim to make art while engaging with the community to promote a sense of belonging.

An example of an activity is "Identity in a Jar".

Through conversations the Agents of Change decided they wanted to engage the community in making an art installation that would be permanent and ongoing.  They brainstormed how they could define their community through engaging them in art making and decided on a jar filled with objects that identified each community member.  They began with creating a jar themselves and invited the school community and surrounding community to participate.

Community Rock Garden

During conversations the Agents of Change focused on the idea that everyone has a story to tell and inquiring about peoples stories could promote a sense of belonging.  They conversed about "access" and discussed access to materials to make art. The Agents of Change wanted to create art work with their community that included a material that everyone had access to.  The Agents of Change planned the Community Rock Garden installation.

"This rock is from my grandmother who collected it and polished it herself. She found it at Lake Michigan on the beach when I was younger and we were all there together as a family. We all collected rocks and lake Michigan is my grandma's most favorite place to be in the whole world. My brain, heart and soul is always with my family and Lake Michigan is also one of my most favorite places to be in the world."

"This rock was from 2014 and I found it at the Michigan Lake in Michigan. The first time I went to a cottage for summer vacation with my cousins but without my parents. One day when I went down to the beach, there were some cool rocks in there so me and my sister went to the water and we got about 18 rocks. Until I felt something big on my foot I reached down and I ended up getting a big, jumbo rock, I showed it to my sister and she was so surprised."

"This rock is special to me because my dad picked it up in Mexico when I was learning to dive to the bottom of the pool. My dad would throw it to the bottom of the pool, I would go get it. This helped me become a more confident swimmer. Whenever I look at this rock, I think about how much it helped me swim."

This rock is one among hundreds that lay in front of our house. It may appear to be an inanimate object, but it stores many significant memories. This rock was a witness to so many events in my children's lives. From the moment they took their first steps, learned to ride a bike, built snowmen in winter and enjoyed water slides in the hot summer. It experienced all the good times and the bad times with every other member of my family. That's why it is important to me."
