Civic Engagement--Identity in a Jar

Making Art while engaging with the community:

The Agents of Change aim to make art while engaging with the community to promote a sense of belonging.

An example of an activity is "Identity in a Jar".

Through conversations the Agents of Change decided they wanted to engage the community in making an art installation that would be permanent and ongoing.  They brainstormed how they could define their community through engaging them in art making and decided on a jar filled with objects that identified each community member.  They began with creating a jar themselves and invited the school community and surrounding community to participate.

Community Rock Garden

During conversations the Agents of Change focused on the idea that everyone has a story to tell and inquiring about peoples stories could promote a sense of belonging.  They conversed about "access" and discussed access to materials to make art. The Agents of Change wanted to create art work with their community that included a material that everyone had access to.  The Agents of Change planned the Community Rock Garden installation.
